Samar’s Journey: How Emirates Is Redefining Travel For People with Autism

Emirates is set to become the world’s first Autism Certified Airline, setting a new standard for inclusive travel

New Delhi: Samar, 16, had always been fascinated by airplanes, watching them soar through the skies from his bedroom window in Mumbai. But for Samar, who is on the autism spectrum, stepping inside an airplane was an overwhelming challenge since childhood. The noise, the crowd, and the unfamiliar routines created an environment that was difficult for him to navigate. His mother always stood by him, but none of the airlines were equipped or accessible for people with autism. Samar managed to travel, but only with great difficulty, relying heavily on his family.

However, a groundbreaking initiative by Emirates is set to change the narrative for families like Samar’s. The airline is set to become the world’s first Autism Certified Airline, setting a new standard for inclusive travel. This will make air travel more accessible for individuals with autism and sensory sensitivities.

According to a survey on AutismTravel.com, about 78 percent of families are hesitant to travel or visit new locations, and 94 percent of respondents would take more vacations if they had access to places where staff are autism-trained and certified.

Hence, Emirates’ efforts will address this gap, making travel more inclusive for everyone.

The airline has worked closely with the International Board of Credentialing and Continuing Education Standards (IBCCES) to understand the infrastructural needs of people with autism and other sensory sensitivities.

More than 30,000 Emirates cabin crew and ground staff will receive comprehensive training in autism and sensory awareness to understand and address the unique needs of neurodiverse passengers. As part of the training, Emirates’ teams will also be educated on the spectrum of autism, misconceptions, and the challenges faced by people with sensory sensitivities.

As part of this mission, Emirates will introduce innovative services, including sensory guides and neurodiverse sensory products such as fidget toys, to help customers de-stress.

For Samar and countless others, the skies are becoming friendlier, signaling a future where travel is truly for everyone.
